Job Description
Duties: 
Cuts and/or joins metal parts in order to fabricate or repair vehicle equipment, appliances, tools, furniture and other articles, using tools such as plasma cutter, mig welder, tig welder, arc welder, oxyacetylene torch, chop saw, grinder, drill press, clamps, and hand and power tools. Designs and fabricates parts, equipment and jigs. Welds a variety of fabricated metal parts. Fabricates, modifies, and repairs structural components of vehicles and equipment. Brazes a variety of ferrous and nonferrous materials. Inspects, brushes, and grinds welds; bends, forms, drills, and tempers metals. Calculates quantities, times, materials, distances, weights and standard-to-metric conversions. Maintains supply inventory; inspects parts and supplies.
Other Responsibilties: 
Maintains work records. Transports vehicles, equipment, parts or supplies to various locations. Operates department automobiles, trucks, trailers, forklifts, etc. Maintains welding shop equipment. Performs general housekeeping. Performs other related work as required.
Working Conditions: 
Working environment is outdoors and indoors. May be exposed to the following: hazardous materials, flammable liquids, confined work areas, excessive dust, cutting/chipping/grinding, toxic fumes/vapors/odors, compressed gases, high noise areas, oily surfaces and extreme temperature.
Job Requirements
Education and Experience: 
High school diploma or equivalent. Four (4) years’ experience in the welding trade, including at least one (1) year at the journeyman level or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledge: 
Applicable state and federal environmental laws. Vehicle passenger safety issues. Occupational hazards and safety practices. Construction of various models of automobiles. Characteristics and properties of various metals; properties of various welding rods and fluxes. Techniques employed in heating cutting, brazing, and resurfacing ferrous and nonferrous metals with acetylene and electrical welding equipment. Standard practices, materials, processes, and tools of the welding trade. Automotive and mechanical equipment operation, including electrical, hydraulic, and other mechanical operations.
Skills: 
Use and care of tools and equipment. Ability to maintain and make minor repairs to acetylene and electrical welding equipment. Ability to use the appropriate equipment and machinery to repair or make new parts. Ability to make or work from blueprints or shop drawings, perform layout, minor design work, and repair or replace broken parts. Interpersonal skills necessary to be courteous of fellow workers, supervisors, other members of the organization in giving and receiving information.
License and/or Certification:

Mental & Physical: 
Calculate mathematical problems. Read and interpret technical shop manuals, manufacturers' specifications and wiring schematics. Ability to lift, carry, push or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 75 pounds occasionally. Ability to do continued walking, stooping, and standing. Flexibility and balance to work from objects such as ladders, platforms, scaffolding, etc. Good vision, hearing and speech. Ability to maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail.
